Poets & Writers Directory

I think every writer has little marks they’re striving to achieve. Something I’ve had my eye on for years is a listing in the directory of Poets & Writers.
For those who are unfamiliar, Poets & Writers, Inc. is one of the largest nonprofit literary organizations in the United States serving poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers and they publish a bi-monthly magazine called Poets & Writers Magazine.
A couple of years ago, I hit my first mark, getting listed in their directory as a Poet when “Origami Stars and Hot Air Moon” was published. With the release of “The Lost Always Take Off Their Shoes,” I hit my second mark, getting the extra tag of Fiction Writer.
I may have qualified for both earlier as publications in literary journals count towards the points needed for the listing, but a published book by one of their recognized publishers gives the writer the full points needed for their listing.
It’s a small thing, but it’s something I’ve wanted to achieve for a while. Perhaps it’s being recognized by an organization that I have no connection to as a poet or writer that makes my journey feel legitimized. Imposter syndrome is a very real thing I’ve wrestled with for years. And even as I tell other writers to claim titles they don’t yet feel comfortable wearing and encourage them that they belong in the world of writing, I have doubted whether I belong in this space. Not for lack of passion or drive, but because I’ve wanted to be an author most of my life. The things we want the most, sometimes seem the most unattainable.
So, here’s to a small achievement that means so much to me.
